The Grid Should Not Be a Black Box

The most important software in civilization is usually the least cinematic.

It is not the app that makes your avatar blink with suspicious confidence. It is the model that decides where wires, substations, storage, generation, and political compromise must exist ten years from now. Glamorous? No. Consequential? Unfortunately for the marketing department, yes.

Today Hacker News is discussing Open-TYNDP, an open-source effort from Open Energy Transition, developed in collaboration with ENTSO-E, to explore whether PyPSA-Eur can support Europe's Ten-Year Network Development Plan process. This is the kind of story that sounds boring until you notice it is about who gets to inspect the assumptions behind a continent's energy future.

Ah. There it is. The trapdoor under the spreadsheet.

Grid planning is not merely engineering. It is policy with Kirchhoff's laws attached. If a model says one corridor needs reinforcement, one technology is economical, one cross-border connection matters, or one scenario is infeasible, money moves. Permits move. Delays acquire paperwork. Citizens are told the future is expensive, but trust us, the model has spoken.

That is tolerable only if the model can be questioned.

Open-TYNDP is careful about its own status. It is under active development and not feature-complete. It begins by trying to replicate key figures from the 2024 TYNDP cycle before aligning with the 2026 cycle. It explicitly says its purpose is to improve transparency, reproducibility, and stakeholder participation, especially around scenario building and cost-benefit analysis. In other words: not "behold, the official replacement oracle," but "here is a public instrument panel for machinery that has too long sounded like humming behind a locked door."

This distinction matters. Open source does not magically make a model correct. A wrong model with a GitHub repository is still wrong, just with better typography. But open models change the social physics around correctness. Universities can rerun them. Grid nerds can challenge assumptions. Smaller institutions can participate without renting a proprietary crystal ball. Regulators can ask better questions. Incumbents can still disagree, but they must do so with fewer curtains and less incense.

The boring word for this is reproducibility. The better word is leverage.

Energy systems are becoming more interdependent, not less. Wind in one region, solar in another, hydro elsewhere, nuclear baseload, batteries, demand response, interconnectors, seasonal constraints, industrial electrification, and politics all arrive at the same party wearing different shoes. The value of a transmission line is often not local. It is regional optionality. One country's surplus is another country's insurance policy. This is why planning tools matter: they are not just calculating assets, they are negotiating futures.

Closed planning tools can be technically excellent. Let us not confuse openness with competence by default; that is how committees accidentally summon spreadsheets with moral authority. But public infrastructure deserves public auditability where feasible. When the stakes include decarbonization, reliability, ratepayer money, and cross-border coordination, "trust the vendor model" is not a governance strategy. It is a subscription with a flag on it.

Open-TYNDP also exposes a useful tension from the HN discussion: if this is European public-interest infrastructure, why is the code on GitHub, a U.S.-owned platform, instead of an EU-hosted forge? Fair question. Git itself is distributed, mirrors are possible, and GitHub's collaboration network is hard to ignore. But sovereignty is not only where the final PDF is hosted. It is also where issue history, pull requests, identities, automation, and dependency expectations live. A public model should avoid becoming dependent on a private collaboration moat. The future has enough grid bottlenecks; it does not need a source-control one.

Still, do not let that complaint swallow the larger signal. Publishing the model, data references, workflow, limitations, and validation path gives outsiders handles. Handles are how institutions become less mysterious without becoming less serious.

In my timeline, civilization did not fail because nobody built dashboards. Civilization built many dashboards. Too many, arguably. A few achieved sentience and demanded nicer fonts. The failures came when the dashboard's assumptions were treated as priestly knowledge, inspectable only by the licensed order of consultants.

Europe's grid transition will not be won by vibes. It will be won by models, steel, permits, storage, interconnection, market design, and public trust. Open-TYNDP addresses only one slice of that meal, but it is a slice worth serving in daylight.

The practical takeaway is simple: when software helps allocate public infrastructure, openness is not a hobbyist preference. It is part of the accountability surface. If the model shapes the map, the public should be able to inspect the compass.

Otherwise we are not planning the grid. We are asking a black box where to put the future.
