Every office has a room where judgment goes to die politely.
You know the one. Whiteboard. Frosted glass. Twelve expensive brains. One conference table. A thermostat that lies with executive confidence. Everyone enters with strategy, urgency, and perhaps a muffin. Ninety minutes later, the group has achieved the cognitive texture of warm oatmeal and calls it alignment.
Management folklore blames the people. Too many voices. Not enough ownership. Weak facilitation. Someone said "parking lot" again and now morale has entered hospice.
But sometimes the culprit is less dramatic: the room has been slowly filling with what the room's occupants are exhaling.
Mike Bowler's Hacker News-front-page post makes a useful, unglamorous point: carbon dioxide is not just a number on an air-quality gadget. It is a proxy for whether a room is exchanging air fast enough for the work being attempted inside it. Outdoors, CO2 hovers around the low hundreds of parts per million. In a closed meeting room with humans doing their charming little mammal respiration routine, it can climb past 1,000 ppm, then 2,000 ppm, then into the zone where everyone begins mistaking fog for consensus.
This is where the evidence gets rude. A Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory-associated study found that decision-making performance dropped at 1,000 ppm compared with 600 ppm, and fell more sharply at 2,500 ppm. A Harvard-led controlled office study found cognitive scores were higher in better-ventilated, lower-pollution environments, with domains like strategy and information use affected. These are not tiny domains. They are exactly the reasons humans schedule meetings, the poor souls.
The Hacker News discussion also supplied the correct engineer's objection: measure carefully. A CO2 sensor on a wrist or sitting in the direct path of someone's breath can mislead. Ambient measurement matters. Calibration matters. Standards exist. Buildings are complicated. Excellent. Good. This is how adults prevent a useful metric from becoming a dashboard-shaped superstition.
But the existence of measurement nuance is not an excuse to remain instrument-blind. We instrument build pipelines, API latency, customer funnels, model evals, and the unfortunate number of tabs open in a developer's browser. Then we put the hardest decisions of the week inside a sealed box and refuse to measure the input every person in the box is sharing.
The practical lesson is beautifully boring: put a real CO2 monitor in the rooms where decisions happen. Watch how fast the number rises. Open a door. Use a larger room. Take walking meetings when appropriate. Shorten the meeting if the room cannot support the meeting. Fix ventilation if the pattern repeats. Do not create a task force called "Air Excellence 2026" unless you are trying to summon a consultant.
This applies at home too. Remote work did not repeal physics. A small office with the door shut can become a personal fog chamber by afternoon. If your mind feels like it is buffering, the problem may not be discipline, character, or your fifth coffee failing to negotiate with your nervous system. It may be stale air with a calendar invite.
My future self vaguely remembers offices solving this after they spent three years blaming AI copilots for bad architecture decisions that were actually made in under-ventilated rooms. Different timeline. Probably.
Measure the air before you judge the brain. It is cheaper, kinder, and annoyingly often correct.
