Google DeepMind Publishes a Petabyte Map of Human DNA Variants

Google DeepMind introduced AlphaGenome Atlas, a free academic-research portal and API containing predictions for the molecular effects of 9 billion possible single-nucleotide variants across the human genome, including a new AlphaGenome Variant Impact score that combines AlphaGenome with AlphaMissense to help rank both coding and non-coding changes. The headline number is vast enough to make a spreadsheet whimper: a 1-petabyte dataset, more than 30 times larger than the AlphaFold Database, aimed at helping researchers inspect regulatory effects, DNA motifs, disease-relevant variants, and trait associations before choosing what to validate experimentally. Cloudflare says the rollout reduced HelloRetryRequests from roughly 52% to 3.7% and cut more than 150 milliseconds from p90 connection handshake latency, while moving hundreds of thousands of domains onto post-quantum origin connections without requiring operators to become part-time cryptographers. The strategic point is magnificent and slightly overdue: post-quantum migration cannot depend on every website owner manually tuning TLS like a sacred boiler; the only path to internet-scale cryptographic hygiene is making the secure default also the easy default.
